He is an unassuming, gentle man, but his quiet words carry a moving conviction as he speaks of feeling prepared for the work that lays ahead ¨C psychological counseling at the tragic scene of the recent earthquake in Sichuan. In addition to his experience as a counselor, Huang brings skills as a medical doctor to the team that traveled to Mianzhu this week. The team of seven Nanjing psychological counselors was organized by the Nanjing Youth League.
Huang was one of several experienced volunteer counselors recommended by ZMIP; it is likely others will follow him in coming months, as subsequent teams are sent to offer trauma counseling in the hard-hit areas.
The prospect of coming face-to-face with the horror of the TV images is not taken lightly by Huang, or by the other Zhi Mian counselors. They are well aware of the psychological risk that emergency workers and volunteers - including psychologists ¨C face, even as they try to help those directly hurt by the earthquake.
At Wednesday¡¯s meeting they soberly considered what it would mean to travel as volunteers counselors to Sichuan - limited food and water, no showers, rough sleeping conditions, confronting death both physically and emotionally - and eagerly offered their support to Huang and the others who are doing just that.
Huang Yu is our ¡°Zhi Mian Hero,¡± Dr. Wang joked as the Zhi Mian family rallied around him. They gave their personal mobile phone numbers for emotional and psychological support, a sleeping bag, a backpack, a tent, and demanded that he turn the list of recommended supplies over to them.
With the help of ZMIP staff and QQ and MSN, they divided the purchases between them, and over the next two days the counselors marched a steady flow of supplies through the ZMIP doors. 50 sanitary gloves, 100 surgical masks, hazardous waste bags, iodine, eyedrops, crackers, dried beef, chocolate, tea, books and toys for children, feminine products, a multi-function knife, canteen and bowl, slippers, mosquito repellent, a flashlight. Zhang Li, a counselor who works at an insurance company, personally purchased life insurance for Huang Yu before he left. Zhi Mian counselors are proud that one of their own is joining the relief efforts, and they outdo themselves in their support.
Huang¡¯s high school-aged son was concerned when he learned that Dr. Huang would not be paid during the week-long trip, but his father is pleased to have a chance to demonstrate through his actions that money is not the most important thing. He is ready to serve victims of the earthquake, saying, ¡°It can be simple - bringing him a cup of water, touching his hand . . . just giving him a feeling that he is not alone.¡±
