The call went out on Monday morning. The Nanjing Youth League was putting together a team of professional counselors to offer crisis intervention for earthquake victims in Sichuan. Those interested in forming a group from Zhi Mian should sign up.
Within minutes the phone had begun to ring, and on Tuesday, the Youth League had to close the sign-up; they had sixty volunteers ¨C the full training capacity.
On Wednesday afternoon, nearly twenty from Zhi Mian joined a group of sixty Nanjing counselors for a training provided by local psychological counseling expert Tao Laiheng. The highly respected professor and counselor had recommended Zhi Mian, and ZMIP counselors made up the largest majority of the group.
Zhi Mian counselor Huang Yu was among seven Nanjing counselors chosen to travel to Sichuan. His combined experience as counselor and medical doctor make him an ideal candidate for the first team. It is likely that other counselors will join second and third teams.
Later Wednesday evening twenty-five counselors gathered at ZMIP to discuss what else they could do to support victims. Energy crackled as they competed for space to make their suggestions heard, and a list of sixteen ideas quickly filled the whiteboard.
We can pass on news of a website that is posting daily articles about how to deal with trauma. Could we extend our hotline service to make calls free of charge to long-distance as well as local callers? We can certainly offer support by telephone to those who go. We should send cards to Zhi Mian ECP participants from Sichuan; they are part of our family.
The group also identified many opportunities to help right here in Nanjing. A group of earthquake victims have been transferred to a nearby hospital. There must be college students from Sichuan in the city as well, some of who may have lost homes or loved ones, and in coming months other people from the earthquake will continue to relocate here. All of these groups will need assistance as they deal with trauma.
Psychological trauma counseling, Sun Wen reminded the group, will be needed not just this month, or the next, but for the next ten years. We don¡¯t need to be heroes, Wang Xuefu added, and the group emphatically agreed. Zhi Mian counselors will do what we can now, and next year, and the next, and later, when no one else is offering help, we will. | |
