三年多前，因为机缘巧合，我来到直面心理咨询中心观摩，并做热线辅导员的培训。那时认识了这个机构的创办人——学富和孙文，被他们的热诚和抱负深深感动。回到Fuller之后就对我当时的导师Alvin Dueck分享我在直面的收获，引起他对“直面心理”的强烈兴趣，从此与直面结下不解之缘。我们在美国经常谈到如何将心理治疗融合在非主流文化中，包括基督教文化和中国文化，而直面是我们在东方发现的一颗宝石，闪烁着非凡的哲理和执着，让我们看到了实现中国心理学的希望。
直面的领导人王学富博士对现代中国文学有深厚的基础，因此他看心理治疗的角度不为西方的文化所拘束，更能自由地发挥他从鲁迅文学中悟出的“直面方法”。然而单靠学富的修养和孙文的才智是不够的，直面能发展到今天，于我所见，是因为学富与孙文用人有方，训练及召聚了一批志同道合的义工，齐心努力。每一次到直面就像遇到老朋友一般，彼此嘘寒问暖，义工的热情让我每每在离别后感到一丝内疚。这也是为何我又回到直面担任督导的角色。也是因着这股坚强的阵容，直面的心理函授课程能开始在神州大地传播她的种子。这也是直面为何能在亚洲辅导界中继续放光的最大原因。未来，希望有更多资深及合格的辅导员能从直面诞生，并且怀着一颗热爱祖国文化之心，不惧于西方的强势而削足适履，以至于把中国人之优秀传统与智能遗留在辅导室外。

About three years ago, in serendipity, I had a chance to visit ZMIP in Nanjing, doing observation and training at the center. Hence, I got to know her founder—Dr. Wang and his wife, Ms. Sun. I was very moved and inspired by their enthusiasm and vision of counseling in China. After the trip, I reported what I had learnt about ZMIP to my advisor at Fuller—Dr. Alvin Dueck. He was also intrigued and interested by the ideas of Zhi-Mian and from there our connection with ZMIP was established. In an overseas setting, we talk a lot about theories of integration and indigenous psychology, but it is through Zhi-Mian’s philosophy and Wang’s persistence that we found our hope for an indigenous psychology in China. ZMIP indeed is a jewel for the Chinese people!
In my opinion, there are several reasons why ZMIP became successful. First, her leader, Dr. Wang, has a deep understanding of modern Chinese literature and history. Therefore, his lens of psychotherapy is free from Western psychology, but instead is framed by his insights gained from the work of Lu Xun, a great thinker of modern China. Nevertheless, it is never sufficient to just depend on the experiences of Wang and the intelligence of Sun. From what I have seen, a big part of ZMIP’s success was contributed by the teamwork of volunteers. Under the leadership of Wang and Sun, the volunteer counselors in ZMIP are highly devoted and united. Every time I visited ZMIP, it felt like a reunion with old pals or family, having fun in catching up with each other. Their passion always made me feel guilty when it was time for me to leave. That is also why I took on the role as supervisor during my last visit. Because of her capable manpower, ZMIP managed to spread the seed of Zhi-Mian, over the land of the dragon, with its correspondence course. I believe this will be the greatest source of strength for ZMIP to continue to shine in the field of counseling in Asia. In the future, I hope there will be more qualified and experienced counselors coming from ZMIP, who have a heart for their motherland, and would not compromise the spirit of indigineity, under the power of Western psychology, by leaving the wisdom and tradition of Chinese culture outside the therapy room.
